I have the joy of praying regularly with a handful of ladies from the choir. We call ourselves The Sistahs and usually gather to pray in The Barn. (Don’t ask.) Last week we were greeted with a cheery table of Bing cherries and quiche and cinnamon rolls.
Then a sistah prayed, “Thank You, Lord, for Your gift of hospitality!”
What caught my ear was the word Your. Certain people have the gift of hospitality because the Giver of such gifts is Himself hospitable. James 1:17 plainly states that “every desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven” (The Message).
In the first chapters of Genesis, God prepared a perfect world for Adam and Eve. He spread a perfect table. And when they ruined the perfection through disobedience, like a perfect Host, God prepared a sacrifice to cover their imperfection.
In the last chapters of Revelation, God has prepared a perfect place for His people to enjoy perfect fellowship with Him. God has prepared a perfect table with a perfect meal. And we will worship our Heavenly Host, the Perfect Sacrifice, with perfect praise: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!
“The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.”
Such is the hospitality of heaven!
