He’s Got You Covered

Most words have only one or two meanings; some have more than a dozen. Consider the word cover

— You cover someone by guarding him or her from attack.

— You cover the losses of another via an insurance policy compensation.

— In baseball, you cover the bases by being in position to receive a throw.

— In banking, you must maintain a balance sufficient to cover your checks.

— To cover is to envelop, as you would wrap a warm blanket around yourself.

— You can also cover the stains on a wall with a fresh coat of paint.

Although all of these are excellent analogies of how the Lord covers us, this last example brings to mind a vivid childhood memory.

Before Pixar purchased it as its present headquarters location, this Emeryville property boasted a massive warehouse for Sherwin-Williams Paints. Atop the warehouse was a magnificent animated neon sign of the company logo: a huge can of red paint being poured over the globe. In my kid’s mind, it was a striking reminder that the blood of Jesus was poured out to cover the sin of anyone born on the planet.

“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29, ESV)

“This is My blood, God’s new covenant poured out for many people for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matthew 26:28, MSG)

“You are worthy… because You were slain, and with Your blood You purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.” (Revelation 5:9, NIV)

I’m so grateful to know that no matter what my situation is, God has it covered!
