Living in the Same Light

“This is the message that we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5, NIV)

Christ Himself was the embodiment of “the message.” In the incarnation, the Son of God became the Son of Man and His entire earthly life manifested the brightness of the Father’s glory. “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being…” (Hebrews 1:3a, NIV)

God’s nature is light—that is, God’s essence or character is glory, truth and holiness. Not one shadow or trace of darkness can exist in Him. No ignorance, no error, no untruthfulness, no sin, no death. Not even one particle. Not even one speck. He is altogether pure and holy.

“Consequently, if we were to say that we enjoyed fellowship with Him and still went on living in darkness, we should be both telling and living a lie. But if we really are living in the same light in which He eternally exists, then we have true fellowship with each other…” (1 John 1:6-7a, Phillips)

What is your definition of light? What is your grid of truth? “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” (Proverbs 14:12, NIV)

If God is your definition of light and Jesus is your grid of truth, then you can rest assured that you are living in the same light in which He eternally exists and enjoy true fellowship with Him.
