Name Above All Names

“There is a name I love to hear / I love to sing its worth / It sounds like music in my ear / The sweetest name on earth”

So goes the first verse of the beloved hymn, “O How I Love Jesus”. What makes His name so special? Why is it deemed worthy? Why does a heart come back to life at the mention of His name?

When the angel Gabriel appeared to Joseph, he delivered specific instructions regarding the naming of the Holy One to be born of a virgin: “You are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).

God promised such a Deliverer all the way back in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:15). When Christ died on the cross, “God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9-11).

So why does the all-powerful Name resonate with our hearts as the all-loving Name? 1 John 2:12 gives us a clue: Our sins have been forgiven on account of His name.”

“Precious Name, oh, how sweet! Hope of earth and joy of heaven!”
